So my neighbor has a Passat TDI and took it to the dealer for maintenance and the manager (or salesman, who knows) said he doesn’t have to have the recall done when it’s issued because some states, NJ in this case, don’t require you to have recalls fixed. Is this true or is the guy blowing smoke up my neighbors ass?

Does VW even have the fix out yet? My M is part of the airbag recall and they don’t have parts for the drivers side yet and that recall has been out for months.

No one can make him get the recall performed. Millions of recall notices get ignored every year, even the ones related to the owners safety (ex:airbags, brakes, etc). A large percentage of people open the letter, and decide instead of making an extra appointment they’ll wait till the next time the car is serviced. A lot of them forget about the recall all together as todays cars can go more than a year between oil changes if you follow the on-board computer service intervals, and drive less than 15k miles a year.

Too soon. I don’t think we have heard the final word from VW or the EPA yet.

He may not end up being wrong, but it’s too early to make statements like that.

No fix out yet. I just put in for the gift card thing from their website. I’ve tried staying up on the events and I’m guessing there won’t be an advertised solution out until February-ish.

Certain recalls have to be done before your registration can be updated. While you don’t have to register, it is advisable.
